JOURNALISM
"The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them."
IDA B. WELLS
When my article got published in the school magazine, it was a moment for pride for my parents - and it was a moment of magic for me. While it did not immediately translate into something, a few years later I was able to pursue my dream of journalism. My bachelors degree is in Journalism and I used those three years extensively to gain all the experience I could in the newsroom. With an excellent curriculum that focused both on theory and application, I was able to learn while working within and outside the college. The moment I stepped inside my first newsroom, I felt like I had arrived.
There was magic in the three months that I spent there, writing extensively, day in and day out. I was getting a byline everyday and reading my name on the paper never got tiring.
In my years as a journalist, whether an intern or employee, I have gained writing, reporting, interviewing and multimedia story-telling experience. In 2012, I interned with the Deccan Herald for their lifestyle supplement, followed by the national magazine The Week in 2013. Soon I went to do my masters, doing which I interned with the Hindustan Times in 2015. This culminated in my first job as a trainee sub-editor in The Indian Express (Online) from April 2016 to June 2017. In the time that I spent there, I was able to live out most of my journalistic dreams, including working with the very renowned and thoroughly inspiring journalist, Neha Dixit.
I have run desk copies, done live reporting from the ground and written several opinion pieces on subjects of politics, gender, culture, film, among others. I quit soon after my first promotion to continue in academia but the experiences I had at The Indian Express are simply some of the most memorable ones of my life and my entire profile can be accessed here. My work as an intern in various places can be accessed here. Some of my favorite pieces, below.
